Everyone has some kind of environment they simply can't stand or an environment they would never like to see become a reality for them. It is important in story writing to be able to depict vivid scenes of places that are desolate, barren, or outright wastelands with destruction as the primary element of the scenery. This is the place that is the worst case scenario that we would never want to be in. In some cases this can be the real world, but go a little extra mile and think of an environment that could be worse than the real world.
Writing Exercise: Create a setting that is the least ideal for you. This could be a place with much destruction, it could be a place that exemplifies a fear you have be it a place full of bugs and snakes, or a place that is claustrophobic, tight, and hard to breathe in. Be as descriptive as possible and use the 5 senses of taste, touch, smell, sound, and sight--being vivid as possible to help the readers visualize the scene. If you want to go the extra mile, write it in such a way that the reader feels a sense of discomfort in the setting you create.
Example: It was a fresh day in summer, when suddenly I noticed my skin starting to peel rapidly. Scale upon scale, the skin flaked off and flew away like sheets of dry seaweed. Smoke filled the air like that of a freshly cooked batch of jerky. Piece by piece, the particles of my being and all that was around me dissipated-- turning into a burning mist of particles that mimics the very moment when Big and Little landed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Its so hot, it's starting to get so hard to breath. It smells like I'm in a filed of flowers but there all dead. It's so bright that I can't see where I am. I feel so claustrophobic, I'm in panic mood. I start to feel around and come to find out that I'm in a room. I have no idea what my soundings look like. This is the worst feeling ever the smell of dead flowers is making me sick I might throw up. Then all of a sudden the lights go off and the room turns red with loud sirens. People in dark uniforms rush in and pick me up, a kick and scream and then they give me a shot with something I don't know what but I go limp in there arms. Everything goes black. I don't know where they take me next I think I'm dead.
I was suddenly and quite abruptly awoken from my sleep. I roll over and see my alarm clock and it reads five thirty AM. I listen and then I hear what woke me up in the first place the sound of my parents fighting again. This time they are arguing over money and what to do with me and my sister. I sneak down stairs careful not to alert my parents. And stand outside the kitchen as they argue. All the sudden I hear my dad scream for me and I walk into the room. I ask yes whats wrong and he says this is all your fault get out of my house and dont bother coming back. I stare in shock and disbelief this cant really be happening can it. I run form the room up to bedroom and slam the door shut and lock it. I hear my dad yelling at me get out you cant stay hear if you dont leave im calling the cops. Next thing I know the cops have arrived and they are dragging me out of the house I see my sister crying as im forced into the back of the patrol car. All I could think is how could they know.....
Student Anon: It was a cold morning and I was out for my morning walk when I noticed my hands started to turn blue and purple. I was like 9 blocks away from my house, so I had to hurry and get home then I can feel my hands starting to go numb. When I was getting closer to my house, my feet started to hurt really bad as if there were thousands of needles poking my feet. Once I was down the street from my house, I could feel my body going numb. I made it inside and I went to the kitchen and made myself a cup of hot cocoa to see if that would warm up my body a little. When I tried it I could taste nothing so I panicked and ran to tell my mom but my mom said it's prolly just a cold. So I went back to the kitchen to see if I could taste it again but I couldn't so I just went and grabbed a little heater and sat on the couch. As I sit there my hands are still feeling numb and cold, so I put them in front of the little heater and they started to hurt so bad as if I broke my finger. So I looked at them, and one of them was gone. Then I freaked out and try to find it, but I couldn't because it was like it melted, but then everything went dark and I woke up in my bed like if I just had a dream…..
The expedition had been going smoothly for the past few hours, though the forest around them seemed to be ever thickening, making it harder and harder to see what was ahead. The sun was starting to set so they believed it would be best if they set up camp for the night though the sounds of the forest were quite unnerving making it quite difficult to get much sleep. Though eventually the explorers managed to go to sleep, but once they woke up they were put back to sleep with a rock. When they came to they found themselves in a strange camp filled with crazy looking people. That are most likely the natives of the area. Along with that they were all tied down to tables the explorers tried to negotiate but obviously the natives didn't know their language or at the very least didn't care. They sat their for a time and then the natives started their ritual. Starting off by sowing the lips of the explorers shut so they could not scream and then began to cut the skin from the still living explorers bodies causing them immense pain making them scream in agony but that only caused more pain as their lips tared from the string that had been used to sow their mouths shut. Their skin was then thrown into a fire and all they could do was lay their in pain for what seemed like hours as the smell of their skin filled the air. More bits of skin were taken from them as they laid their. Most passed out, though in the end they were all finally allowed to die. No one knew what happened to them, but a week later a search party was sent into the forest, yet they don't know what horrors await them.
Is kinda dark wasnt really sure exactly what I was supposed to write about but i believe that it is good enough i noticed that most peoples writings are in first person though mine is in third so hopefully that is ok
It's so hot. It feels as if my skin is going to melt off. There's no water. I yearn for anything to quench my thirst. Sweat seeps from every pore of my body. I'm standing in the middle of a concrete valley. Nothing green as far as the eye can see, just concrete. In the distance I could see the heat rise from the blackness of the concrete. I look around me to see only men. Big, red, sweaty, fat, old men. they're all wearing the same exact thing, a white t-shirt, tan cargo shorts, and a red baseball cap. I look at them in disgust, but they pay no attention to me. More and more of them seem to appear. Its seems like its getting crowded. One of them lifts an arm. I gag at the putrid sent. Soon they're all I can see. everyone of them are all mushed together with me. the sweat makes us stick like glue. I DIE DUN DUN DUNNNNN
i was at my buddy's house and they threw a party but i did not expect the number of people that where going show up. he said a few of the boy long story short and 50 people later the rooms where crowed getting stepped on 24/7 it was so boring nothing was going except drinking and smoking so I went to the roof and there where hella people up there to ever where I turned where people there was no chill spot so I when to the garage and them where smoking so I chilled in his car so that I could call a ride to go home because I was over it
It was a day at my friend's house, his whole family did nothing but smoke cigarettes all day inside of their house. My eyes started to burn like chlorine water in a pool, my every breath was just filled with a toxic smog, my head started aching with that nauseating feeling. The smell was just pure tobacco, you could barely even see 8 feet in front of you, it was like being near a campfire and sitting right in front of it. Never mind the second hand smoke, you can feel it absorbing into your skin.
It was night time with a full moon, and underneath that moon was a huge forest with a nice little village. Birds were sleeping soundly in their nests, fireflies roamed around near a crystal lake, a calm water fall, and people were sleeping soundly in their nice houses. On that night the crystal lake started to glow a soft red but it turns out the Moon was turning red itself. The night wasn't so calm anymore, something was rising in that world as soon as the moon turned red. But, the whole town didn't know about the moon being red that night. One person stayed awake when they were about to go outside and look for themselves something appeared in front of them. It was a shadow figure with horns, decayed wings, and red eyes. That shadow figure then turned into dark gray smoke and started surrounding that person all around, when that dust disappeared, the person opened its eyes and their eye color turned red, That Moon wasn't a normal shiny moon, It was the birth of chaos.
